SAT writing questions

Although Charrollete enjoyed paining as well as writing, she is more widely (recognized as) an author than an artist.
The answer is no mistake. But shouldn't we say "recognized to be.'?

The economy (suffered through) a recession that (was equal), if not worse than, (the recession that had) developed (a decade before.)
The answer is (Was equal to). But shouldn't we say suffered from instead of suffered through?

Thanks in advance.
