santa claus giving lumps of coal to naughty children.

Dust bunnies are frequently a source of amusement by making out that they are actual living creatures formed of dust, attested to by the many websites on the care and feeding of dust bunnies.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dust_bunny#cite_note-1 Many http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartoon reference dust bunnies, and parents often give tongue-in-cheek warnings to their children that dust bunnies will haunt them if they do not clean their rooms, not unlike http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Claus giving lumps of coal to naughty children.

I know the meaning of "Santa Claus". I know the meaning of "naughty children". And I guess "lumps of coal" means a "heap of coal" but still I cannot understand the emboldened parts. Could you explain it to me?

Actually why "Santa Claus" gives a coal to the children?

Hi, One of the traditions of Xmas is to tell children that Santa Claus will give then a lump (large peice) of coal instead of a gift, if they have been naughty. The idea is to encourage children not to be naughty. Clive
