Sank or Sunk

Can "sunk" be used for this sentence or would "sank" be the better choice?

Then what she had said sunk in and I realized I had to make new plans again.

In my opinion "sank" is better. I would go so far as to say that "sunk" for past tense is incorrect in modern English, but the many people who use it that way presumably would not agree with me.

The airforce sank or sunk three enemy ships. In this case I believe sank to be the correct verb. Your thoughts?
