So, when do we use "the same" if we can't say or write it in the sentences you've mentioned?

Hi,
We always say the same.

However, I can think of at least two idiomatic expressions which do not include the definite article before same:
same old, same old and same difference.

Would you please try to put these expressions in a sentence? (I think I fell into the same trap.)

The only exceptions I can think of involve substituting a demonstrative adjective for "the."
I'm hearing that same rattling sound again!

I am not sure what you ask me to do, Avangi. Well, you know—these are merely expressions.

‘How is it going?’ ‘Same old, same old.’

‘This sentence has two errors.’
‘No, actually it has three errors, especially considering it is a run-on sentence.’

I realized too late that these fragments were not intended to be used in a sentence, but were casual conversational responses.

I had been through a similar exercise myself in which fragments beginning with "same" popped into my head.
But when I tried to put them in a sentence, the article was necessary.
