Same meaning?

Is there a slight difference between the following two sentences?

1) He has never been able to impress me/ he has never impressed me.

2) I have never been impressed with him.

Thanks.

The first part of #1 suggests that he has attempted to do so. Other than that, I see no difference in meanings.
