Do both of these sentences have the same meaning?

"-He died, trying to rescue the little girl

-He died, while trying to rescue the little girl"

To my ear, the version with "while" allows that the two events MAY have been coincidental, and the first example suggests more strongly that the attempted rescue was the cause of the death.
