Same as

Our children go to the same school as theirs.
Our children go to the same school as this.
Are both the sentences correct ?
Does the function of same....as change in the two sentences ?

-- They have children. Their children go to the school that our children go to.

Our children go to the same school as this.
-- Don't say this. Our children go to this school. "The same school as this" is meaningless and would simply mean "this school."
