SAME and THE SAME

1.When do we write/say SAME and when do we write/say THE SAME ?

2.Why does Collins Dictionary show that in a word 'princess' the accent in the word is put on /'princess/ while in Cambridge Dictionary (on the internet), which I think is a recognized dictionary , the stress is /prin'cess/ ? Which pronounciation is correct and why ?

Top answer

(1) 'Same' is always preceded by the definite article-- I cannot think of a case when it is not. (2) Both pronunciations are acceptable. /prin 'ses/ is primarily British English.

Headline and telegram style, yes, and anywhere that complete sentences are not required-- as happens especially with articles. This phenomenon is unrelated to the use of 'same'.
