Same

Hi.

He defined symmetry as:

"A situation in which both sides have the same position.[...]"

What does 'same' mean here? And why?

dictionaries give several senses after all...

Thanks in advance

The dictionaries do not list several definitions for a word because the word is strictly limited to those uses. A dictionary can only approximate a word's meaning, and the meanings are not enumerated even though they are numbered. One dictionary will give three definitions for a word, and another will give seven.

  • You have to get the idea of the word and then learn how it is applied by reading and listening a lot.
  • You can no doubt see that the core meaning for "same" of "being the very one" is related to this slightly figurative meaning of "corresponding in every particular".

Physical symmetry allows you to put a mirror in the center of something, and the whole would look the same.

Symmetry could also be used figuratively.

A word like "wow" could be called symmetrical (as well as a palindrome).
