Salutations in letters

Should the salutation "Dear Dave" be handwritten in correspondence?

I have seen many letters from senior government officials, and MP's use handwritten salutation and "yours sincerely" is also handwritten with the rest typed. But I have not commonly seen this used elsewhere.

Is there an accepted standard on salutations in correspondence?

[/nq] I think this is where they have used a standard letter, but didn't have (or didn't know how to use) the mail merge function on their word processor.

I beg to differ, at least Pondianly. As somebody mentioned upthread, it's normal in Br correspondence to "top and tail" a typewritten or word-processed letter by hand, whether or not you have a secretary. I always do it, and may sometimes even raise an eyebrow when I don't receive it, except probably for "Dear Sir" letters. It carries no necessary implication that you've sent the same letter to so
