Salutations, commas, semicolons, and capitalizing

When addressing someone, we surround the word in commas.

I don't know, Mike, whether we should charge him or not.

May we go please, Jim?

Jim, may we please go?

What about in salutations? Does it differ based on the formality of the writing peice?

  1. Hi, Jim:

  2. Hi, Jim,

  3. Hi Jim,

  4. Hi Jim:
And should we capitalize the first word underneath the salutation always?

Finally, should we/can we drop the commas when addressing someone in informal contexts?

Thanks Emotion: smile

With 'hi', it's informal– do it any way you like. I do. But no colons.
