Salutation

Should we use a salutation when we know the name of the person but not sure about the gender?

Hi, If you are unsure of the person's gender, then simply use something like... " is not big deal to omit. Hope that helps.

Hi,

If you are unsure of the person's gender, then simply use something like...

Dear FirstName Last Name:

blah blah blah

blah blah blah
blah blah blah
blah blah blah
blah blah blah

Sincerely,
You

The "Mr." or "Ms." is not big deal to omit.

Hope that helps.

Hi MountainHiker,

Thank you for the reply. But if we omit Mr. or Ms. doesn't it look more informal? How about just writing

FirstName,

blah blah blah

blah blah blah
blah blah blah
blah blah blah
blah blah blah

Sincerely,
me

Hi,

If you just go,

FirstName,

blah blah blah

Sincerely,
Me

You will be definitely informal and inappropriate for business communication.

Dear Alexis Smith:

blah blah blah

Sincerely,
You

That is still professional. Alexis is both a male and female name.

Or, you could try
Dear X. Barker, Esq.

which I was taught was a way out if you know someones intitial/first name and surname but not their gender.
