Question

When addressing an envelope or letter what is the correct way to address when the wife is a doctor?

Mr. and Dr. Joe Blow???

Mr. Joe and Dr. Sally Blow???

I am not sure the correct way and would appreciate your opinion. Thanks so much!

Mr. and Dr. Joe Blow??? This approach of using only the husband's name (eg Mr and Mrs Fred Smtih) is now oldfashioned, almost archaic.

Mr. Joe and Dr. Sally Blow??? OK

I am not sure the correct way and would appreciate your opinion.

My first thought is whether you need to include 'Dr' at all, if it is a personal, non-professional communication. eg Just 'Joe and Sally Blow'.

I was thinking above about the envelope. As regards the salutation for the letter, I find I only use a joint salutation if I know the people well, in which case I'd usually write 'Dear Joe and Sally'. For a 'business' letter, I'd write to one person only.
