salesman

Salesaman is/are made not born.
Salesman here is considered as singular?should be is?
but i found that most of the webiste is using 'are'
which one should be correct??

i found out this sentence from certain internet
i wonder that the word salesman is appear as singular at this context.( is it should be using 'is'?)
