Said/Told

What is the difference between said and told?

When can they be used appropriately?

Top answer

I think "told" is more specific and is used to convey that a person provided specific information to someone else, wheras "said" is more generic and just indicates a person spoke in general.

They are past tense of "say" and "tell". Your question is unclear? Do you want to know the past tense/ past participle usage?

Lee just called and said he is going to be late for the meeting. Indirect reporting in past tense.

He also told me to go over the next fiscal budget f

No, I did not want to know about their forms. I meant that at times I can only use said and then there are times when I can use only told.

For Eg: She said that she would be late.

You told me to come on time.

How do I use them appropriately at the right time?

Use the search box to find say and tell.
