Said-told

He did the job and told me he had to leave.
He did the job and said he had to leave.

Can these two be used interchangeably? What's the difference between them? Thanks.

Hi, Yes, you can use these two interchangeably. There is a slight difference in meaning: told ME - this sentence informs you that it is you, whom he wanted to hear what he had to say said - you have no information about who heard what he had said - he simply said something and it does not matter to whom it was said So, the difference lies in specifying the person / people who are told something. You say something (in general), or you tell SOMEBODY something.
