safety net of “whys”

Does the highlighted sentence mean "the unbalanced action of contemporary art is like walking on a tightrope (or blade) without having any safety net of "reasons" below it? Does in fact reasons for an action play role as a safety net for it?

Context:

artistic experience at the end of the millennium is becoming more and more complex, one of difficult balance and right scale. It is walking a tightrope with no safety net of “whys” below.

red apple Does the highlighted sentence mean "the unbalanced action of contemporary art is like walking on a tightrope (or blade) without having any safety net of "reasons" below it? Yes, I think so. "unbalanced action of contemporary art" maybe does not have quite the right flavour, but I think you probably understood the sentence correctly.
