Safety is on?

While watching a movie, I saw a sign inside a gun factory. It was written on that sign the following: "Safety is on".

What does that suppose to mean?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I have another question related to the same sentence. What if someone is handing a gun to another guy and saying: Safety is on. What does he mean here? Does he mean that the gun safety is locked or unlocked or is he referring to something else?

Guns have safety catches to prevent inadvertent firing. So this gun has its safety catch on and needs to be unlocked before it can be used.
