Safely vs. Safe

This was a test question and I am confused about which sentence is correct. Can someone help?

He was relieved his son returned safe.

He was relieved his son returned safely.

Both sentences seem correct to me. Safe is often used especially in this collocation: He returned safe and sound . The adverb safely is of course also right: He returned safely.

This is a confusing question.
I suspect both are possible but they have different meanings.
Maybe the first implies that when he got home he was in a safe condition, while the second implies that he travelled in a safe condition. Like...
He returned safely = Ex: He drove carefully
He returned safe = Ex: He wasn't hurt

It's just a feeling I have, just an opi
