safe and sound / sleep safe or safely?

I know "safe and sound" is a idiomatic expression.

But I'm not sure why this is.

1. Sleep tight! (here "tight" is used as an adverb, isn't' it?)

Q) Do you say "sleep safe" or "sleep safely?"
If the former is the case, is "safe" used as an adverb? (in my dictionaries, however, there's no use of "safe" used as an adverb.)

Okay. Then if we make up a sentence, can we use either form?
E.g,. Domestic dogs are totally dependent on their owners, and it's important for them to test their bonds to know whether they can sleep safe(ly) at the house.

In the example sentence above, is either "sleep safe" or "sleep safely" sounds okay? (The original form is this: "... whether they can sleep safe and sound."
