Safe and secure

Hi

Larry had difficulty feeling safe and secure in the world, and his social phobia became symbolized in his body’s defense mechanism—the white blood cells of the immune system.

1. Does "safe and secure" mean the same thing, i.e.: "sense of security"? Or maybe "safe" has got something to do with self-confidence?

2. I understand that "became symbolized" means "was reflected in"?

Thanks

Hi

So "safe" could mean "self-confidence" and "secure" - "sense of security"?

Thanks
