Does the sentence mean:
a) Sadly, she grew critical
b) In a sad manner, she grew critical
c) She grew critical and her 'criticalness' was of the sad kind.

I think it means 'c'.
One could say:
2) She grew critical in a sad way.
But that would be ambiguous. One can't tell if the growing was done in a sad way or if the 'criticalness' was of a sad kind.
Gratefully,
Navi.

So the melancholy girl wandered through those long galleries, ... wondering what had become of the splendor that used to beam upon her from those walls. She grew sadly critical, and condemned almost everything that she was wont to admire.
As a sad and melancholy person would do, she became critical.
