Sad surprise

Hi

Can we say "sad surprise"--I mean, would it sound natural to the native speakers?

The news was a sad surprise...

I'd put it this way, Tom: Although "sad surprise" isn't something that would be considered a commonly used collocation, I certainly don't see any reason not to use it in your sentence. It tells me the news was both sad and surprising.
