Sad in some way
They have a strong work ethic, and take pleasure from simple tasks, but something about them is always sad in some way.
It would be great if there were some kind of further explanation, but the speaker haven't wished to share more of his thoughts, so I need a little help here.
Could you tell me what "in some way" means here? "to some extent", maybe?
