It seems to me that it would be studies of junior military officers.
I have no idea what about these officers would be studied.

I have seen this word in a Newspaper one month back. So, it would be very difficult to write anything more than this word. I think, the word 'Subaltern' also has the meaning 'Underprivileged'. Does the word Subaltern Studies can be termed as 'Studies of the Underprivileged'?
