Tragically and horrifically, this ritual (and the hope it sparked) were dealt a crippling blow in 1890 by the U.S. cavalry at Wounded Knee, South Dakota—as they massacred the Indians who had gathered there to perform the dance. Please check subject-verb agreement of the bold words.
