S or not?

Dear all,
One should put an s when using the word guidelines (US guidelines recommend...).
But when one use the word update after guideline, it seems that both versions could be used:
(According to the recent guideline update/ According to the recent guidelines update).
I suppose that both versions are correct, but i'd like to know the difference in the meaning?
Thank you for your help

guideline update -- This is the normal correct form, used for one guideline or more than one.

guidelines update-- This form is sometimes used if the writer wishes to make clear that there is more than one guideline.
