"S" or not?

Hi!

Please, I'd like to know which of the forms below is the correct one:

a) The most common foods in the American breakfast are bacon and eggs, cereals ,pancakes, and different kinds of bread with peanut butter followed by coffee or juice.

or

b) The most common food in the American breakfast is bacon and eggs, cereals, pancakes, and different kinds of bread with peanut butter followed by coffee or juice.

Are there any mistakes in the following, please?

"Cakes are generally eaten for breakfast or they may be served for tea or at other meals."

"The Typical American food and drinks are..." (or is the correct : "The Typical American foods and drinks are..." ?).

"The United States is the world's biggest consumer of coffee and soft drinks."

Anonymous... which of the forms ... is the correct one:
a. ... foods ... are .... (though, from the viewpoint of truthfulness, I challenge the accuracy of the peanut butter part!

Hi Gina:

a) is correct. The word "food" should be plural in this case. When we speak of "food" in general, it is a non-count noun. (Give me some food, please. I have more food than he does. )
But here, you list many different kinds of foods, so the plural form should be used.
