's for abbreviations
I see ‘s used to make abbreviations plural everywhere, but I’ve been taught that it’s incorrect. Is TTP’s (plural not possessive) or IED’s (plural not possessive) ever correct?

That is a question of style, and there is no correct or incorrect, there is only convention, tradition, and publisher's rules. The modern trend is toward fewer marks, so "IEDs" is preferred, but "IED's", what you could call old style, is not wrong (unless you are writing for someone who says it is).
