S at end of verb

Do I put an 's' at the end of the verb? (Ignore meaning of sentence): McDonalds acts independently from Coca Cola / McDonalds act independently from Coca Cola. Please also explain rule.

You would certainly do that in American English. It seems to me that the intent is to show a relationship between two corporations. Each corporation would be treated as a singular unit (in AmE).
