Hi,

Could you please explain the use of apostrophe s in the sentence:

"He was a good friend of my father's."

Why not simply "my father"?

It's often spoken with the 's as it trips off the tongue better, but I agree with you - there seems no grammatical reason to have it. I'll let one of the more authoritative people answer definitively though!
