Rustic subjects, screen space

The Guru star, who is now working in her third project with celebrated filmmaker Mani Ratnam in Ravana started off her address in chaste Tamil, greeting the audience but soon switched over to English.
Veteran Tamil directors K Balachander and Bharathirajaa, both of whom are credited with redefining the content of Tamil cinema with their revolutionary and rustic subjects, share the screen space for the first time in the film, being directed by Shankar's associate Thamira.

Could you please explain to me the emboldened parts?

The word 'rustic' means 'of or pertaining to the countryside'. Here the writer probably means the characters of Mani's films are 'simple and devoid of urban sophistication' yet charming and endearing. The word 'space' here refers to the participation of the persons in the film.

Thank you Zafar.

But I wonder then what "screen" means there? And what it means by "screen space"?

It is weird but screen space means actual screen presence of the persons involved. Since here we are talking about the directors I would find that strange because normally they keep behind the camera.
