Running messages

I got "running messages" from "Alice in Wonderland" and want to know if it's too anachronistic to be understood by contemporary folks.

"... wondering at how queer it is to be running messages for a rabbit..."

"Running messages" means "running errands" as well as "running around in vain, because of poor planning or being fooled", right?

Thanks
Tin

Oh, dear. "Running messages" means delivering messages from one person to another. Or, in this case, from one rabbit to whoever rabbits send messages to.
