runner-up

Hi, everyone:Emotion: smile

I know "runner-up" means the one who takes the second place in a contest.

However, I'm wondering what's the meaning of "up" in "runner-up" .

Thank you in advance!

Hi,

I think it's really just idiomatic. "We say it because that's what we say."
