Run out to...

Jimmy: One of the Miss Sweet Corn contestants
was just iced like a popsicle.

Chloe: Thanks, Jimmy, but l can't exactly run out
to Smallville for frozen sweet corn. Go there lickety-split just because of a frozen girl?
l've got stories l've gotta file. Print or edit?

Jimmy: What's gotten into you?
Chloe, someone set this girl's dial
to deep freeze.
Someone put her on deep freeze?
This has meteor freak
written all over it.

"run out to Smallville," etc - yes. "file" - I have not worked in journalism (well, except for that food column that time) but it is my understanding that this means to get the story to the editor, who then edits it and places it in the layout for the publication. "Set the dial to deep freeze" is a reference to an appliance, I believe.

  • Most freezers have dials so you can regulate the temperature (you might want it a little higher to keep ice cream soft enough to scoop, for example).
  • "Deep freeze" would be the coldest setting.
