Run out of/run out

Hi!

There is very little gas left in the tank.

They are going to run out of gas/ run out gas.

Can I also use "There are going to "run out" gas." instead of "run out of" on the sentence?

If not, please explain a reason.

Thank you in advance.

No. The reason is that it is wrong. run out of is needed.
