Run-on/Comma(s) Query

The two men holding Dalia force her to her knees as their leader takes out a sword and holds it over her neck.

That's not a run-on sentence without any commas there, is it? To me it seems smooth enough.

All right, thanks. Now let me ask you: Do you normally put a comma before "as if," when "as if" comes in the middle of a sentence, even if it isn't mandatory?

You told me in a thread a while ago, when I asked about it, that even though it seems smooth without the comma, you would still use a comma there. Why is that one different than the example I just gave you?

The difference is very subtle, and it may exist in my mind only. The subordinate clause in #1 strikes me as more essential than the one in #2,
