Run a fine line

Hi,

“There’s a fine line between unique and formal when it comes to writing papers.”

Does it mean that something unique can be formal and visa versa?

Thank you.

The question is "What DOES it mean?"

That’s what a friend of mine used. I also found it a bit strange.

What about:

“There’s a fine line between too personal and unique with one’s own spin on it.”?

If you say 'unique', do you really need to add 'with oen's own spin on it'?
