Rumble or bellow

Hi

I have found these two words (rumble/bellow) for the sound crocodiles make. Can you please tell me if they work at all?

As the crocodile was pelted with rocks, it started to rumble/bellow.

Not being too familiar with crocodiles or alligators, I think that their sound might be better described as a snarl or as a hiss. I'm probably completely wrong .
