Rules for using 'the'

hello,

can someone help with rules for using 'the' please.

when can i use it?

also why is the cold war is 'the cold war' when world war I or II is not 'the world war I or the world war II'?

  • Anything even approaching an adequate answer would take pages and pages, and even then probably wouldn't help with many problematic idiomatic cases.
  • If you Google for "use of articles in english" (or similar) then you'll find lots of material, covering the basics at least.
