rule of thumb

Please, Can you correct? I've used rule of thumb. Is that ok?
How do you write this?
I don't know how famous she is in the industry. Can you give me an example of someone I know that's as famous as her in the industry so as to have a rule of thumb.

Thanks in advance

In my opinion, "rule of thumb" is not appropriate in this case. When you consider the origin of the "term," it seems like it should fit. But we don't use it in that way.

  • There are two parts to that "rule": (1) IF the stick is only as big around as your thumb (2) THEN you may beat your wife with it.
  • You're looking for a standard by which you may judge this lady.

If it isn't appropriate and I don't use the rule of thumb, how should I write it?
