1. Were they on cell phones? Dropped off, I believe, could indicate that she "hung up".

2. Go to Google images and find "rubick's cube". It's a maddening puzzle invented by a man of that name. A rant, of course is a verbal monologue that goes on and on. I think that this means that her 'rant' made absolutely no sensne.
