Rubbish as a verb

Hi

I would like to know if the word rubbish as a verb (criticize someone) is informal or slang?

The boss was too ready to rubbish his staff.

Thanks,

Tom

You see it in most levels of (British) English, certainly up to the level of formality of newspaper articles. It might not be appropriate in very serious and formal writing.

Interesting! In AmE, it's 'trash' (with about the same register): The boss was too ready to trash his staff.

We do also use "trash" over here in a similar way.
