I agree with Mr. M. when you're talking about rows and columns on paper (which is obviously what you were asking about, since you used the terms "vertical' and "horizontal.") But in a classroom, I think you could use "row" to describe all the desks in a single line in either direction. ("The front row/back row," and "The row by the doors/by the windows.")
