Vocabulary

router

Hi,

router - a very popular IT/networking related term

Dictionaries usually give two possible pronunciations for this word -
['ru:t?r] and ['rauter].
I hear ['rauter] is more common in AmEng.
Which pronunciation do YOU usually hear in your office/area?

Curiously, I have never heard my fellow countrymen pronounce this term other than ['router]...
Who knows... perhaps this third pronunciation too can sometimes be heard in some English speaking countries/communities?...

thank you!

Hmm. I think I say both in my mind ( ['ru:t?r] and ['rauter] ). I don't believe I've ever said it aloud. For the edging/engraving tool, however, I always say ['rauter].

It's always ['rauter] ( actually ['ra???] ) here in Silcon Valley, and they ought to know! They make them! (AmE)

(The ? is a tapped r that sounds a lot like a d.)
