Vocabulary

Route

Hi everyone,

I have heard route being pronounced "root", but also "rowt" (as in 'cow'), and I was wondering if there was an "official" pronounciation.
My idea is that 'root' probably is the original pronounciation, as the word comes from French; and it was later americanized in 'rowt'.
I was also wondering if there wasn't a difference in meaning. For instance, I don't htink you would say 'rowt' 66.

Can you help me with this?
Much appreciated.

Either one in the US. I usually use "root" for the highway, but am more likely to use "rowt" to describe the path. But honestly, if you recorded me, you might not find that to be the case.

Thank you. That was more or less my perception too.

The verb is "rowt" for me, I think, and everything else is "root". I think. It is definitely "root" 66 everywhere. I think.
