okay then, i guess one of it must be american pronunciation and the other is british.

dunno which is which though.

I think I hear people pronounce it /ru:t/ most of the time. /raut/ is probably the American variant.

I tend to use 'rut' for highway numbers (Route 66), and 'raut' for the customary path followed by mailmen and paper boys (boys who deliver newspapers to your door in the morning), or whoever (a mailman's route, a paper route).

I say rut (root). I say this for usually anything, road names and even something like paper route. Others say raut for paper route.

As a verb, though, I say raut.
