Round the block of clay

I watched the potter round the block of clay.
I saw the above in one of the books on Google.
It said "round" is a verb but I was confused between "preposition and verb"
How do we differentiate "round" as a verb from it's role as a preposition here?

What do you think the meaning of the sentence would be if "round" was a preposition? What situation/activity would it describe?
