hi,
I don't understand this:

it does mean that a character which is ‘flat’ in the script can be ‘round’ as portrayed by the particularly signifying actor.

particularly, I don't understand the meaning of "round as a portrayed"

This apparently means that an unusually gifted actor can take a dull, lifeless (i.e.: "flat") character in a script and portray him as a full-blooded, live (i.e.: "round") entity.
