Rough estimate

What would be the correct English word for a rough estimate? Let us say you have to repair the roof of your house. You can ask a company to come and visit and give you rough estimate as to the total cost of reparaiton. Afterwards, you will take a decision on the reparation.

It can be some other aspects too. You could ask a dentist as to a rough estimate about the treatment. It is very expensive in this country to go to a dentist. I have seen people ask some kind of a paper as to the costs.

Is there a special word for the rough estimate?

Idiomatic here would be, "Give me a 'ballpark figure'." (But that's still two words.)

'Guesstimate' is relatively new (and I don't like it much.)

What about approximation?

My dictionary says the words ballpark figure is AmE. Our British friends might have another word.

Hi Rotter,

I can't really tell you that an AmE idiomatic phrase is better than 'rough estimate' here. Maybe you could say 'gave us this preliminary cost-estimate' or 'they approximated our costs as...'

There is also something called 'a good faith estimate', used in real estate transactions.

Rotter,

I urge someone to look at the last part of my question.

What do you mean, 'the last part of my question?' Are you, in fact, looking for a specific single word that you know exists, but can't think of it. Why don't the various suggestions above suit your purposes?
